Dibenzothiazole Disulfide (MBTS/Accelerator DM): an indispensable vulcanizing agent in the rubber industry
Dibenzothiazole disulfide (MBTS), commonly known as accelerator DM in the industry, CAS: 120-78-5, belongs to the thiazole sulfide accelerator class and is one of the basic additives with a long history of application and strong universality in the global rubber processing field.
Its molecular formula is  ₁₄ H ₈ N ₂ S ₄, with a molecular weight of   332.5; Under normal conditions, it is a gray white to light yellow powder or particle with a slight bitter taste and a density of about 1.45-1.54 g/cm ³; Soluble in chloroform, slightly soluble in benzene and ethanol, almost insoluble in water, and has good storage stability under normal conditions.
Unique vulcanization characteristics
The critical temperature for sulfurization of MBTS is about 130 ℃, which has significant after effects: the reaction is gentle at low temperatures, and the activity is rapidly released after heating, making it less prone to early coking and ensuring high safety in production operations.
Compared with many quick acting accelerators, its vulcanization curve is flatter and the rubber material is evenly cross-linked; Moreover, it is non polluting and not easily discolored, and can also be used for the production of some light colored rubber products.
When used alone, the vulcanization rate is relatively slow. In industry, it is usually compounded with thiuram, guanidine, and dithiocarbamate accelerators to form a synergistic system and flexibly adjust the vulcanization efficiency; In G-type chloroprene rubber, it can also be used as an anti scorching agent and retarder.
Main application areas
As a universal accelerator for natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, butadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, and recycled rubber, MBTS is widely used for:
-Various types of car tires, power tires
-Rubber hoses, tapes, rubber rollers, seals
-Rubber shoes, rubber cloth, industrial rubber miscellaneous parts
-Sulfurization control of some special rubber formula systems
From heavy-duty construction machinery rubber parts to daily rubber products, it provides a stable cross-linked structure for rubber materials, effectively improving the strength, elasticity, and aging resistance of vulcanized rubber, and is the "invisible cornerstone" in the rubber industry chain.
Attention: This product should not be used for rubber products that come into direct contact with food. If relevant scenarios are required, strict compliance verification should be carried out in accordance with national regulations and standards (such as FDA, etc.); Please refer to the official SDS safety data sheet for specific safety operations.
Storage and Packaging Reference
The standard packaging is a 25kg lined plastic composite bag; It is recommended to store in a cool, dry, and ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources and strong oxidants, with proper dust protection. The normal shelf life is about 24 months.
As a mature chemical additive, MBTS is still one of the most commonly used basic accelerators by rubber formulation engineers at home and abroad due to its high cost-effectiveness and good process tolerance.
