GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene)
GPPS is an amorphous thermoplastic, which is made from * * styrene monomer through free radical polymerization. It is the most basic variety of polystyrene (PS) family, and belongs to the Tiktok encyclopedia of styrene series resins with HIPS (modified benzene/high impact polystyrene) and EPS (expanded polystyrene).
1、 Production process
Raw material: styrene monomer (from petroleum cracking), mainstream industrial route:
1. Continuous bulk polymerization (mainstream among domestic manufacturers): styrene with initiator, segmented temperature pre polymerization+tower polymerization; Remove residual monomers and extrude granulation. The product has high purity and clean particles.
2. Suspension polymerization: styrene drops are suspended in water for polymerization to obtain bead resin, which is mostly used for some special brands
>Reaction principle: Styrene undergoes an addition polymerization reaction to form random polystyrene macromolecules.
2、 Basic physical and chemical parameters
-Appearance: Colorless transparent glassy particles with high glossiness
-Density: 1.04-1.06 g/cm ³
-Transmittance: 88% to 92%, close to glass
-Vicat softening point: 85-100 ℃; Hot deformation temperature is about 70-80 ℃, not resistant to boiling water
-Processing temperature: Injection molding/extrusion 180-240 ℃
-Very low water absorption rate, generally does not require drying before processing
-Resistant to weak acids, weak bases, salt solutions, and alcohols; Soluble in benzene, toluene, acetone, dichloromethane and other organic solvents, easy to crack/corrode in contact with grease and some essence
Advantage
1. High transparency, high smoothness, and excellent coloring properties;
2. The melt has good fluidity and is suitable for forming thin-walled and complex small parts;
3. Excellent dimensional stability and low shrinkage rate;
4. Excellent electrical insulation performance;
5. The raw material cost is moderate and recyclable.
3、 Common brand classification (by purpose)
1. High flow injection grade (such as 123, GPPS-525): high MFI and good fluidity; Thin walled products, disposable transparent tableware, toys, cosmetic covers.
2. Universal injection grade (152, 685): Balancing fluidity and strength; Lampshade, stationery, CD box, instrument window.
3. Extruded sheet grade (1460, 818): high molecular weight, higher strength; BOPS sheet, transparent thick sheet, food vacuum tray.
4、 Main application areas
-Food packaging: disposable transparent lunch boxes, yogurt cups, jelly cups, vacuum formed trays, food lids;
-Daily necessities: transparent stationery, hangers, cosmetic bottles, fruit plates, toys;
-Optics/Lighting: lampshades, simple optical lenses, light diffusion substrates;
-Laboratory consumables: culture dishes, transparent test tubes;
